St Mawes Recreation Ground just keeps getting better and better. 2012 has seen the Rec committee champion yet more improvements. We’ve just installed a wonderful tower with slide and varied climing elements with appropriate safety surfacing. We bet the children of St Mawes can’t wait to use it! St Mawes – The Back Story: In July 2010 the charity held an opening celebration of its new phase funded by a Cornwall Council Playbuilder grant and many other supporters. A new woodland adventure trail, a bespoke shelter, a family area and fire pit were among the new additions. The site already had some sturdy old traditional play equipment, skate ramps, a zip wire, tennis courts and a large grassy games area. St Mawes Rec. has been run by Trustees since 1966. “Our advice would be to get as many people as possible involved. This is not a project that happens then comes to an end, it will keep going. We are looking at making the concrete path through the site into a play path next.” Lynda Pridmore, Trustee. “We ran fun events with climbing walls and llamas and asked the children and young people what they valued about the rec and what they wanted to change. They wanted to keep the open grass area, they didn't’t want more equipment They wanted the adventure trail and skate ramps and they helped design it all and while the trail was being made they kept running up there to add their ideas. The girls wanted the shelter so they could sit together and keep an eye on what is happening. Now the Rec committee has around 8 young people who have joined.” Dinah Croft, Trustee The shelter has been a big hit with all ages. There has been no vandalism. “We had to get used to a different way of working with the Koes team that built the shelter and the trail, they were not like the usual contractors but now we have children dragging mums, dads and grandads up to the woods to see.” Lynda Pridmore Workshops run by Koes the woodworkers cooperative actively involved the children and young people in learning rural skills. A survey has shown that the rec is what some children value most about living in St Mawes and the community shows its appreciation by making donations, eg from the Bingo club. Groundwork supported the project and they brought some young people they were working with to help out. They are going to be involved in maintenance too. It has all been passed safe by an RPII qualified safety inspector.
