The Lawns covering an area of some 15.5 acres (6.27 hectares) with
facilities such as woodland sweeping down to an open unfenced meadow,
a multi games court and childrens' playground.
Children, young people and families living and visiting Croydon can
enjoy and experience more play opportunities in the newly developed
play spaces that have been installed across the borough.
Having been awarded funding from Big Lottery for the Croydon 'Play 4
All' programme 2007-2010 and playbuilder funding from the Department
for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) 2008-2011, Croydon has
developed new play spaces and made improvements to some existing play
areas.
A lot of consultation work with children and young people has been
carried out regarding the type of play they would like to see in their
local play spaces. They have contributed really well in expressing
what they consider 'play' to be, what some of their favourite 'play'
experiences are and what 'play' experiences they would like to have.
Croydon Council appointed Erect Architecture to design the new play
area. South West Play, appointed by leading London based landscape
architects Erect Architecture and Collinson's Landscapes have worked
tirelessly to turn this creative design idea into a reality.
The new playscape is a natural but fairly complex multi level climbing
structure, which involved South West Play hand-making and installing a
lot of intricate rope work, ensuring that the equipment was not only
innovative and creative, but also attractive and complementary to its
surroundings, we used a natural Polyhemp rope throughout.
